Building a Hutch

When building a hutch the most important thing to keep in mind is allowing enough room for your rabbits. They’ll need a hutch spacious enough for a nesting area, and eating area, and you want to do your best to have enough space to keep those separate. We did a two room hutch, one side has a wooden floor for their nesting area, we wanted something solid for the winter months, as a wired bottom can get drafty. The other side is a wire mesh hardware cloth bottom, so that when they eat and then poop and pee, it falls right through the mesh and down to the ground below. I would highly recommend using this hutch style, with the wire cloth, it makes harvesting the poo, and keeping the hutch clean much easier. Also it should be far enough off the ground for things to fall through.

Build the roof at a slant so you don’t have any moisture issues, and try to use a sturdy wood that can withstand seasons, weather, and time. You’ll need to make sure your door can lock or at least shut with no issues, here in the city we have a constant predator issue, but I recommend building a good door anyways. We have a wall separating the two rooms, but that is totally optional, it just gives them more of a box like nesting area, that’t not open to the elements like the other side is. This will also be beneficial for any bunnies in the future. There are hundreds of hutch designs out there, so as always do as much digging as you can before getting started. Look at styles, and ask other rabbit owners, the internet is a world of never ending information, and most helpful so use it!
